How Do the Kidneys Produce Urine

The kidneys, ureter and the bladder are part of the Urinary System in humans (and other mammals).  The purpose of the urinary system is to filter the blood and remove urine from the body.

The kidneys are a very complex pair of organs that filter an amazing 150-180 liters of blood in an adult in 24 hours.

Why are Women Most Likely to Get a UTI?

Women are more likely to contract a urinary tract infection, than are men, especially following sexual activity.  This is partly due to genetics, as the urinary tract in females is relatively short, so bacteria can enter the bladder more easily.

Female babies and young girls can get bladder infections, but thankfully this is rare and can generally be prevented with good hygiene practices such as regular washing and drying of the genital areas.  Avoid harsh soaps and vigorous rubbing because this can cause more problems.

Older women (and men too), can contract UTIs more frequently, most probably due to the weakening of the immune system as we get older.

The most effective way of reducing the onset of a UTI after sex, is to urinate and flush most of the offending bacteria out of the urethra.  Keep drinking lots of water, to ensure that the kidneys stay healthy and produce lots of urine which will flush your body.
